Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are offline.
All service websites and applications respond with a server error. According to a report from DownDetector.com, the interruptions are widespread, but it’s unclear if it will affect all users or some sites. Currently, it is unknown what caused the interruption.
All three platforms went down shortly before noon ET.
“We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products,” a spokesperson said. “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
In 2019, a similar outage lasted about an hour. Facebook said the outage was due to a technical problem. Important websites can also go down if the content delivery network or CDN is offline. This happens in June when one of the CDNs, Fastly, failed due to a technical problem. This has eroded major websites such as Amazon, Reddit, and The New York Times.
